SURVIVING an accident can change your perspective on life.
That was what popular Chinese singer-songwriter Anson Hu told The New Paper recently at the Hong Kong Asian-Pop Music Festival.
Hu, 28, known for songs like Waiting For You and Tell Me, is recovering from a traffic accident last December where the car he was in crashed into another vehicle.
He injured his lower spinal cord and was advised to stay in bed for a few months.
When we met Hu, he was walking normally but admitted he feels uncomfortable if he sits for long periods.
"After the accident, I don't regard money as importantly as before," he said.
"It's only a worldly possession. I don't care about it so much... I want to balance my work and life, to spend more time with my family and cut down on work.
"I'm not sure how long I can maintain this career as this industry is very competitive, but I'll try to keep my job a meaningful one."
Music festival
For now, he does less strenuous activities like attending award ceremonies and performing at events like the Hong Kong Asian-Pop Music Festival, held on March 23 as part of the Entertainment Expo Hong Kong.
The festival is an annual concert, where one representative from Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea and China compete for the Asian Super Nova award.
Newcomer Bevlyn Khoo represented Singapore in the competition, which was won by Korean singer Ali.
An established singer from each country was also invited to perform out of competition. Olivia Ong represented Singapore.
Hu, who lives with his family in Shanghai when he's not working, said he is unable to travel too far because of his condition.
"The accident still lingers in my mind. These days when I'm in a car, I can't help but ask the driver to be careful."
To aid his recovery, he exercises regularly to strengthen the stomach and lower back muscles. When asked how his reduced workload would affect his career and popularity, Hu said: "I think I should be okay.
"I (write and produce) my own music and what's most important is that I put my heart into the music.
"With everything in life, you gain some and you lose some."
